I wanted to post a link to an incredible artist, but I wasn't sure if she fit onto this tibe.
Is her work, surrealist or symbolist?
What is the label, "genre' for current artists who create fantastical art? I mean hasn't surrealism mustated into other forms, can we really call stuff made today, surrealist? Or Symbolist?
check Julie Heffernan out, and let me know what you think (the reproductions don't do her paintings justice!)

Curious to hear what you think.

Re: Difference between Surrealism and symbolist/
Fri, October 13, 2006 - 10:30 PMHmmm. I like looking at her work. It's pretty, and makes me dreamy, and I'd love to see some of it in person.
As for your question, well, I'm the sort of person who needs to know the name for everything. I'm very unsettled in a new environment or when encountered with a new thing until I know what its called. But when I look at Hefferrnan's work, or stuff like it, it's less fun using my left brain to categorize.
Even in my more analytical mind, if you were to ask me the difference between the historical movements of surrealism and Symbolism, I'd happily formulate a definition (which would be fun, because it's a challenging question). But my take on categorizing art that's not self-consciously of a specific school is that genre labels are useful if they're descriptive, but can really narrow thought if they're overly diagnostic.
