Dorothea Tanning was born in the USA. She moved to New York, where she became involved with the Surrealist painters. She became the fourth and final wife of Max Ernst, thereafter spending much of her life in France. She is a prolific painter and soft sculpture artist, who is still alive and painting, with an extensive body of work that explores female sexuality/ sensuality as a theme. She also does writing, and poetry.

i have to tell you, when i was a reasonably little kid (say, 9 or 10) my parents took me to the "women in art" exhibit at the lacma.

they had the dorothy tanning painting or the woman w/ the baby &, i believe, the pelvis.

it was my favorite painting that day & it was my favorite painting for many, many years.

i did not know anyone else ever -thought- about dorothy tanning. thank you for taking the time to write this here.

i have a unica zurn bookish thing around here somewhere.

i still like dorothy tannings work better.
