Joined this one since there are so many members.... and wanted to ask a question.
What do you think about Salvador Dali including his wife throughout his work? He often painted her into his work and stated in a video that she was the center of him and the love of his life. I understand she did not perform the artwork herself, but she did play a key role into Salvador's symbolism.... Love for that matter, jealousy, and fear of loss.

Re: Surprised there is no Dali in any of the Surrealism tribe groups....
Mon, May 22, 2006 - 11:05 AMGala also played a role in poet Paul Eluards life (married i think?) and also in Max Ernsts life.
she was a pivotal figure who is also enigmatic.
Gala never wrote a autobiography, did she?
there are books that give insight into her mind/life etc,
The Lives of the Muses by Francine Prose
Surreal Lives: The Surrealists 1917 -1945 by Ruth Brandon
Letters to Gala by Paul Eluard
The autobiography I especially was Dorthea Tanning's BIRTHDAY...
her autobiography which deals with her life as an artist in addition to her relationship with Max Ernst. (This one is a great read).

Sun, May 28, 2006 - 10:29 PMYes, there is a museum in Spain, The Dalí Theatre-Museum. It's very cool and very interactive. One thing that stands out is the Marilyn Monroe piece where you climb up stairs and look at a viewfinder pointed at the floor at a multi--media piece of Marilyn.
Here's a good link for all things Dali:

I first was exposed to Women in Surrealist Movement through an exhibition at the SF Moma. I bought the exhibition book "Women Artists and the Surrealist Movement”, Whitney Chadwick. It gives an excellent account of the contributions of women, from artist to muse. If you’re interested in this, I'd definitely check it out.

It was at this exhibition that I discovered one of my favorite artists, Remedios Varo. However, I also am infatuated with Leonora Carrington and Frida Kahlo.

Thu, June 15, 2006 - 4:26 PMDon't really like Dali, really don't like Gala. She really seemed like she was on the make to find the perfect guy to remake into a famous artist. They both seem pretty souless to me. Your milage may very.
